October Statistics

October 2013: October was another exciting month in the media center. Over 4,050 items were circulated and almost 2,500 students visited the library during October.

During October, students in grades K – 5 began on various projects:
• Many of the classes are working on creating books. Most of our students in kindergarten and first grade are working on a handwritten and illustrated classroom book. Each student has one page for writing and one page for illustrating. Most of our students in grades 2 – 5 are working on a book that is computer based. The link to access the student’s work is on the Media Center Home Page. The student should have his user name and password if you would like to view his work.
• Several 3rd and 4th grade classes are creating Powerpoint presentations on their areas of study.
• Several 2nd grade classes used iPads and digital cameras to take pictures of their dioramas displayed in the media center. They each recorded one sentence about their book. The individual pages were made into an electronic classroom book.
• Classes from in grades 2, 3, and 4 worked on Tagxedo projects. Tagxedo takes words and creates word clouds. The students did an excellent job with their word clouds!
• The month ended with Book Character Month! It is a great way to celebrate our love for reading!

The Scholastic Book Fair is coming November 18 - 22! We hope to see you there!

Creating Word Clouds

Fourth graders in Mr. Richardson's class and Ms. Destine's class recently worked on creating word clouds with Tagxedo. The students created a project on "things to be thankful for". The projects can be viewed at http://mymediacenter.wikispaces.com/4th+grade+-+Richardson and http://mymediacenter.wikispaces.com/4th+grade+-+Destine.

Authors at Work!

Students in grades K - 5 have begun working as authors and illustrators. Our kindergarten through third grade students are each writing a one page story that accompanies an illustration. Our fourth and fifth grade students will have an opportunity to create an entire book.

Mrs. McCullough's class is featured in the photographs. These first grade students began their prewriting in the classroom. When they arrived in the media center, the students wrote a rough draft paper on the topic "All About Me". The work of the class will be bound in a hardcover book that parents may purchase. The order forms will go out in December and the books should arrive in February.

4th Grade Research - Explorers

Fourth graders in Mrs. Blair's class are researching explorers! The students are searching for information on European explorers using GALILEO and NetTrekker. Each student has been given a chart to help organize the important details. After the research is complete, the students will publish their findings in a PowerPoint presentation.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15. The purpose of the Hispanic Heritage Month is to promote the history, people, and culture of those American citizens who trace their roots back to Spanish speaking nations.

In the media center, books with a Spanish translation have a red label at the top of the spine. On Monday, October 7th, Mrs. Maria Cantero, Mrs. Dulce Morales, and Mrs. Carmen Yamamoto volunteered to read the Spanish version of a book while Mrs. King read the English version. The students were excellent listeners.

A special "thank you" goes to Dr. Miller and Mrs. Weber for coordinating the activity.
