4th Grade - Math Projects

Mrs. Sanford is working on creating PowerPoint presentations with her math students. The students are using arrays to create multiplicative and additive word problems to correlate with the image selected by the student. Each array will also have the “fact family” itemized.

Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems.

• CCSS.Math.Content.4.OA.A.1 Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 × 7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.

• CCSS.Math.Content.4.OA.A.2 Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison.1

August 2013

2nd graders using the self-checkout system.
The new school year has begun and our students are entering the media center for their orientations. We started our classes on Wednesday, August 14th. Teachers in grades 2 - 5 brought their classes in for a review of the procedures in the media center. Students practiced the self-checkout process and left with a library book. We briefly reviewed how to check out electronic books. Students may practice at home if they wish. Please just check out 1 electronic book at a time until our database contains a larger number of e-books.

Summer Reading

May has been a busy month. We started with a Scholastic Book Fair. We also had an Accelerated Reader celebration and a guest from the Sandy Springs Public Library visit. These 3 activities promote reading. We want our students to read over the summer! School may have ended for the year, but learning should not. Keep reading!

All Woodland Elementary students can access the media center home page. The Woodland Elementary Charter School Media Center website location is

http://fcsdestiny.fultonschools.org. Scroll to the bottom and click on Woodland Elementary Charter School. Save this site as a favorite! (User names and passwords are on the link if needed.)

Students in grades 2 through 5 may log in to their library account and check out electronic books. (Their AR user name and password also work for the media center log in.)   If you have any questions, please email kingd@fultonschools.org.   Enjoy your summer vacation with reading!!

March 2013 Statistics

During March, 4,299 items were checked out from our media center! Additionally, many students visited the media center independently for check out, research, or independent activities.

Classes in grades K - 5 worked on the following activities:
Kindergarten - Practiced keyboarding and beginning word documents
First grade - Practiced creating word documents, changing font style and size, highlighting, and changing text color
Second through fifth grade continued to enhance and complete their multimedia projects.

Also, during March, Mrs. Botts facilitated the moving of 23 computers to one central location in the media center! The change has been wonderful!

February 2013 Statistics

Woodland students continue to read! During February, 3631 items were checked out from our media center! Additionally, 1572 students visited the media center independently for check out, research, or independent activities. All classes from kindergarten to 5th grade visited the media center in February. Our kindergarten and first grade classes worked with Tagxedo - creating word clouds. Our second and third grade classes are creating basic Powerpoint presentations. Fourth grade students are making Vokis to share information on the American Revolution. Finally, our fifth graders are working on a World War II project.

2013 in the media center!

We are off to a great start for 2013!

Mrs. Daigre's Class - 100th day of school
  • The kindergarten classes have used digital cameras to take pictures of words that begin with "the letter of the week". The pictures were collected in a powerpoint that is posted on the media center technology page (http://mymediacenter.wikispaces.com/home). Take a look at them! They are so creative with their photography!
  • First grade students have been reading and participating in our Accelerated Reader program. They are also practicing their keyboarding skills with some help from a website featured on the Media Center Home Page.
  • Second grade students have explored our PebbleGo Social Studies database (provided by our fabulous PTA). They are gathering information that will be used in creating a powerpoint presentation.
  • Third grade students are also using the PebbleGo database to learn more about American government. They are practicing note taking skills.
  • Our fourth graders are focusing on the American Revolution. Their information will be shared via a Voki. The Vokis will soon be published on the media center technology wiki.
  • Fifth graders are studying World War II. The war lasted six years. The students are sifting through a lot of information to find the key points that are most important to them. Each student will create a concise multimedia presentation
