Kindergarten - Itsy Bitsy Spider song
This week in the media center, Mrs. King read the fiction story of the Itsy Bitsy Spider to the kindergarten students. The students then sang the Itsy Bitsy Spider song for Mrs. King. Finally, Mrs. King shared a nonfiction spider story with the students. The students are excellent listeners!

5th grade Civil War activities
Fifth grade students at Woodland Elementary School recently
brought history into the classroom with the help of a “Traveling Trunk”
borrowed from the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. The trunk held
reproductions of soldier uniforms, metal dinnerware, and other daily use items
of the 1860s. Students had the opportunity to try on a uniform, research the
Civil War, and create hardtack – a simple, long lasting hard biscuit made from
flour, salt, and water – as part of their instruction. The students also had
their pictures made in the Civil War uniforms. Mrs. Kamisha Botts, Woodland’s
Technology Specialist, assisted the students in editing their photograph using
the PicCollage application on the iPad. The hands-on activities were fun and
kept the students focused, engaged, and learning.

Summer Reading
Summer is almost
here! We are pleased to announce the Fulton County School’s Summer Reading
Lists. Please find the list at this link http://www.fultonmeti.org/summer-reading-list.html
A PDF is also
available at the link. A committee of media and educational technology
instructors from all levels, elementary, middle and high school worked
to compile the summer reading list. The summer reading committee selected
titles based on their appeal to students. The goal of the summer reading list
is to provide students with a wide variety of books to enjoy during the summer
months. Students may wish to read works from other level lists as appropriate.
It is our hopes that the summer reading list will encourage students to make
reading an essential part of summer vacation.

Spring has finally sprung! We had about 1,600 students visit the media center independently during March. The circulation statistics show that 3904 items were checked during the month!
March - in the media center
Recently in the media center . . .
Fourth graders have reviewed reference materials and used Photo Story to help them with the review. |
First graders in Ms. Cantlebary's class are displaying their projects. They are also creating a story with the iPads to share information about their work. |
Kindergarten students are using the Story Creator app to take digital pictures and create a story. Their story reviews what happens in the media center. |
February 2014 Statistics
Because of some more inclement weather, students only attended school for 15 days in February. Thirty classes met with Mrs. King for instruction, approximately 1450 students visited the media center independently, and almost 3000 items were checked out. Students also received the books that they had created from Student Treasures, Black History Month was celebrated, and everyone enjoyed a mid-winter break that included Winter Olympics.

Mrs. Donna Mann, first grade teacher, reading to our first graders. |
- Before I could assist some of our younger students at the computers, Valeska would be up and helping. This happened more than once. She was fabulous.
- Amaree sat with one of the Pre-K students and let the younger child choose which apps to play. He also helped Mr. Mendez get the mats for everyone and was on the floor helping to clean them.
- Jaylen also worked with the younger students. He also helped Mr. Mendez and Abraham clean the mats for everyone. Every time I looked up, he was being helpful.
4th graders evaluate websites
Fourth grade students are evaluating websites in the media center. Students are encouraged to use information only from sources that they know are reliable. Broken links and words that are misspelled are clues that the website may be unreliable. If the webpage has not been recently updated, perhaps a more current source is needed. Helpful hints on website evaluation are found at
Woodland's Spelling Champions
On Thursday, Jan. 9th, the Woodland Elementary School Spelling Bee was held in the media center. Mrs. Elizabeth Sapp coordinated and hosted the event. Mrs. Kamisha Botts, Mrs. Aimee Range, and Mrs. Deana King served as judges. Two students from each 4th and 5th grade class participated in the contest. Madeleine Rosenberg won the Woodland Elementary Spelling Bee. Armani Dill was the first runner up! Both girls are in 4th grade. Madeleine is in Mrs. Sanford's class and Armani is in Mrs. Blair's class. Congratulations to both girls!
